Tolmiya - home care, main types
Tolmiya (Tolmiea) - This bushy plant is quite compact and it is directly related to the family Saxifragaceae. It is found in nature in the temperate zones of North America. At home, only one species is grown, namely, tolmsia Menzies.
Tolmie Menzies (Tolmiea menziesii) - This groundcover species, which is rhizome, can reach a height of 15 to 20 centimeters, and its diameter is about 40 centimeters. On the surface of the leaflets there is pubescence. Each adult leaf has a daughter in the base with its own root system and foliage. Due to this feature, tolmya is also popularly called the “brood with chickens”. On thin long (about half a meter in height) peduncles appear pale green tubular flowers with red pigmentation, which are collected in ears, and this happens at the beginning of the summer period. It is grown as a groundcover, and in an apartment - as an ampelous.
Caring for Tolmiya at home
Photophilous plant. It is necessary to choose a well-lit place without direct sunlight.
It feels best in the warm season at a moderate temperature of 15 to 20 degrees. In winter, it is recommended to rearrange in a cool place (approximately 10 degrees). Negative about stagnation of air, because the room should be systematically ventilated.
It needs high humidity, but it should be borne in mind that foliage should not be sprayed, since it is pubescent. Experienced flower growers advise to pour a little expanded clay into the pan and pour water (the bottom of the pot should not touch the liquid). You can also increase humidity with a humidifier.
How to water
In the warm season, it needs abundant watering, which is produced after drying of the upper soil layer. If the wintering is cold, then watering should be much less, but you should not allow complete drying of the soil. You need to water it with soft water at room temperature.
Tolmiya needs to be fed in the warm season 1 time in 2 weeks. To do this, use complex mineral fertilizer. With the onset of the autumn period, they feed less. In winter, fertilizer is not applied to the soil.
A transplant can be carried out at any time of the year when it will be needed. To do this, use loose and light soil. A suitable soil mixture consists of sand and sheet land mixed in equal proportions. Do not forget about a good drainage layer.
Easily propagated by daughter sockets at any time of the year. To root them, either sand or a mixture consisting of 1 part of sand and 1 part of soil is used.
Diseases and pests
May get sick with oidium - a white fluffy layer forms on the surface of the leaves and shoots. Recommended treatment with a karatan, sulfur or other means against oidium.
Due to violations of the rules of care, spider mites, scale insects, and thrips can settle on the plant.
The foliage becomes pale and the stalks are elongated due to poor lighting.
The foliage hangs down for two reasons, namely, underfilling or overflow.
